French: Loire

Clos Rougeard Saumur-Champigny 2003: One of the finest domaines from the Loire region of France, this is a thoroughly satisfying wine every time I have the occasion to drink it, and well worth its medium high price for a perfect combination of super quality, complexity and easy drinkability. It may be little known except to French wine enthusiasts, yet is available in most fine wine stores. This fine red is made from Cabernet Franc grapes grown without use of pesticides and using natural barrel fermentation, no additives and barrel aged for 18-24 months. It has a very attractive bouquet of bell peppers, herbal aromatics, moist leaves and hay, floral accents and a distinctly Bordeaux like balance. On the tongue, the flavors are clean with silky yet gripping tannins which contribute to its firm medium weight body. A slightly tart, unripened fruit taste of wild red cherries with a dash of white pepper leads smoothly a lingering finish, the green and white pepper leaving a hint of spiciness. It lasts and lasts…. Excellent! 93 pts. May 2012
